Traditionally tooth decay or cavities were identified when spotted in the tooth's surface by either picks or x-rays. To show no obvious outer-surface cavities meant healthy teeth until strong pain implied the opposite.

Today, our patients have no need to wait for pain to appear. Usually as much as 50% of tooth cavity may go undetected by traditional dental methods because most cavities start in the hard-to-see valleys and canyon-like structure of the tooth surface. This new method is a small and practical laser instrument that will scan the teeth with a harmless light of different wave lengths to find hidden decay.

The innovative tool measures laser fluorescence within the tooth structure. At the specific wavelength that it operates, healthy tooth structure shows little or no fluorescence. However, carious tooth structure will show fluorescence, according to the degree of caries, resulting in elevated scale readings on the display.
